Whenever people hear the word "team building," they usually immediately think of out-of-town gatherings, conversations, open forums, trust exercises--the works. These are perfectly normal ways that are utilized to build and strengthen a team. In fact, many of them become more adventurous every year, beginning to include outdoor team building activities like whitewater rafting, for instance. These are indeed exciting things to do that will help members of a team become more able to relate to another, throwing them into unique yet challenging situations and allowing them opportunities to work together. But are these activities effective?

The Effectiveness Of Team Building Activities

Companies usually spend thousands of dollars on regular outings and workshops for employees; these are meant to help them become a closer, efficient, more tight-knit team. Yet even though this gives everyone a chance to step away from work, breathe, and enjoy, this doesn't  necessarily guarantee a strong team. Team building isn't something that should happen once or twice a year; it should be something that is exercised every single day at work. Don't turn outings solely into an opportunity to strengthen your team; use them as an opportunity to relax and enjoy. Providing clear direction and ensuring the understanding of the company's goals and vision is the easiest, cheapest way to form your team, after all.
