Sports are a competition. Sports were created with the intention of being a fun but challenging way to pass time. Since people back then had limited options when it came to killing time (unlike now when we have video games, television and the like), sports were the perfect way to stay active while still having fun. It was meant to be a test of a person’s skill, matching up with other competitors in order to determine who was better. As a testament to sports’ immense depth and greatness, it has withstood the test of time, still remaining a very important part of human living. Think about it, sporting events are among the most watched events every year, and the fans that sports have rounded up are truly plentiful. We see people from all walks of life, be they actors or politicians or regular folk like us, invested emotionally and physically in sports. It is truly amazing how sports have the powerful ability to unite people and have them share in common goals.
One particular example of this is in the sport of baseball. Widely considered as America’s favorite pastime, baseball has become a way of life for Americans. No longer do people consider it to be merely a sport, but rather an event that measures the heart and will of a person. Though this may sound too extreme to some who only view sports as games, it is actually the truth. Numerous accounts have been and are currently being told of athletic accomplishments, considering them to be the pinnacle of human strength. On some level, they actually are. The work that athletes put into being the best out of hundreds of similarly skilled players is truly astounding, and only those who are truly determined to be great will actually be great. No matter how skilled or talented a player may be, what separates him from the pack is a determination to be better than anybody else, whether it be through the way he prepares his mind and body for games, to how much practice time he puts in to perfect his skills. This is what makes champions, and this is what has given sports its universal appeal. It is comforting to know that talent is not all there is to success, and even those who do not possess great amounts of talent will have a chance to succeed by being a hard worker.
Therefore, it is definitely depressing to watch the steroid scandal in baseball unfold before our very eyes. Everyday, more and more “superstar” athletes are admitting to having used performance-enhancing drugs during their heyday. It is disheartening to face the reality that our heroes and idols were nothing more than liars, frauds, and cheaters. It can be pretty jarring for fans (especially the die-hards) to realize that it was not through hard work that their favorite athletes succeeded, but by illegal means. This kind of scandal is enough to damage a sport and lose the support of fans. And sure enough, it did.
Fortunately, proper authorities are now equipped with appropriate tools and methods to test for steroid use. How do we test for steroids? One such method of steroids testing is hair drug testing, which is a revolutionary way of testing for drugs by just taking a hair sample and analyzing it. These hair strand tests are very easy to perform and non-intrusive, and they also offer accurate results. Due to this, drug tests are now an accepted form of drug testing that has earned the respect of companies from a variety of industries, including sports.
It can be tough to accept that people who we considered our role models betrayed us. We always thought that they were our guiding light, but unfortunately that is not true. However, in times like these, it is nice to know that there are still ways to catch these crooks. We may never get back the time we spent admiring them, but at least we now know the truth behind their accomplishments.
